IND vs AUS: Sunil Gavaskar Comments on Rohit Sharma’s Test Struggles and Retirement Plans
Rohit Sharma's poor performance in Test cricket has disappointed fans and raised doubts about his red-ball career. Former India legend Sunil Gavaskar hinted that the “Hitman” might consider retiring after the ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy concludes.
The drawn Gabba Test offers senior Indian batters an opportunity to regain form ahead of the Melbourne Test. So far, the team’s top batters have struggled to make an impact in the series. Among them is Rohit Sharma, who has been out of touch, scoring just three, six, and ten runs in his last three innings.
Many experts are discussing the Test captain’s possible retirement due to his poor form in the longest format. Sunil Gavaskar his views, stating that if the batter fails to score runs soon, he might consider announcing his retirement. He said:
I think Rohit obviously will get the opportunity to play in the next couple of matches, that’s for sure. But maybe at the end of it, if he hasn’t scored runs, my feeling is that he himself will take the call. He’s a very conscientious cricketer, he will not want to be a burden on the team. He’s a cricketer who cares very deeply for Indian cricket. So if he doesn’t score runs in the next couple of games, I think he himself will step down.
The 37-year-old has struggled in red-ball cricket, managing just 152 runs at an average of 11.83 in his last 13 innings. With two matches remaining in the series, this could be a crucial chance for the T20 World Cup 2024-winning skipper to deliver and help retain the Border Gavaskar Trophy.
