Playing Test cricket for a long time is difficult, but a few players have made it look almost routine. Sachin Tendulkar leads the list with 200 Tests, followed by James Anderson on 188. Joe Root has now reached 169 Tests and moved into 3rd place, ahead of Ricky Ponting. The list also includes several other legends who played more than 160 Tests.
Sachin Tendulkar
Sachin Tendulkar’s 200 Tests remain the highest number by any player. The former India batter played 329 innings and scored 15,921 runs, with an average of 53.78. His best score was 248*, and he ended his Test career with 51 centuries and 68 fifties. Tendulkar also took 115 catches.
His numbers show just how much he contributed with the bat throughout a career that stretched across 200 Tests. Even among players who spent more than a decade in international cricket, very few came close to matching his combination of appearances and runs.
James Anderson
James Anderson is 2nd on the list with 188 Tests for England. His achievement stands out because he reached the mark as a fast bowler, a role that puts a huge physical demand on the body. Anderson bowled 40,037 balls and finished with 704 wickets. He averaged 26.45 with the ball and had an economy rate of 2.79.
His Test record includes 32 five-wicket hauls, 32 four-wicket hauls and 3 ten-wicket match hauls. His best innings figures were 7/42, while his best match figures were 11/71. Anderson’s ability to keep playing at the highest level for so long helped him move past several legendary batters on this list.
Joe Root
Joe Root has reached 169 Tests and is now 3rd among the players with the most appearances. The England batter has scored 14,208 runs from 307 innings, averaging 50.38. His highest Test score is 262. Root has 41 centuries and 68 fifties to his name, along with 1,528 fours.
He has also taken 219 catches, adding plenty of value in the field. Unlike Tendulkar and Anderson, Root is still playing Test cricket, so his total is likely to increase. He is already only 19 Tests behind Anderson, while his move into 3rd place puts him among the most experienced players the format has produced.
