In the first ODI between England and Sri Lanka in Durham, Joe Root added another major achievement to his remarkable international career. The 35-year-old became the first English batter and only the 8th player overall to complete 23,000 international runs. Root reached the landmark in his 521st innings, moving past Sachin Tendulkar, who needed 522 innings. Virat Kohli remains the fastest to the milestone, having reached it in 490 innings.
Root needed just 3 runs when he brought up the landmark with a stylish wrist-flicked boundary. His latest feat adds to a growing list of records in which he has overtaken Tendulkar, especially in Test cricket. Root recently surpassed Tendulkar’s record for the most Test half-centuries. The biggest statistical milestone still ahead is Tendulkar’s Test run record. Root currently has 14,278 Test runs, leaving him 1,643 behind Tendulkar’s 15,921.
He is also 31 Tests short of Tendulkar’s record of 200 appearances. Root’s ODI numbers have also been impressive. Before the Sri Lanka match, he had scored 7,826 ODI runs at an average above 51, including 20 centuries. He is already England’s leading ODI run-scorer, highlighting the consistency he has maintained across formats.
