In the aftermath of India’s 3-2 T20I series victory over New Zealand, head coach Gautam Gambhir admitted that managing the national team across formats can leave him mentally drained. However, he insisted that he remains strong enough to handle the pressure and continue in the demanding role.
Speaking after India’s seven-wicket defeat in the fifth and final T20I at Hamilton, Gambhir said coaching India brings enormous expectations, with supporters demanding victories in every match. He acknowledged the challenges of frequent travel and short breaks between formats but maintained that professionals should not make excuses. Gambhir also praised India’s performance, particularly their opening three victories, despite the squad having just one day to prepare after a 15-hour flight to New Zealand.
He highlighted the difficulty of adapting to unfamiliar conditions and facing an experienced home side. India eventually lost the final two matches but secured the series 3-2. The coach backed captain Shreyas Iyer, praising his leadership despite having an inexperienced bowling attack. Gambhir said Iyer had handled the responsibility impressively against quality opposition. He also reaffirmed that India would continue playing an aggressive, fearless brand of T20 cricket. Since taking charge, Iyer has guided the side to Asian Games gold and series victories against Zimbabwe and New Zealand.
