Uncertainty Over Rohit Sharma’s Availability, Aakash Chopra Discusses India’s Opening Options and KL Rahul’s Role for Australia Tour
Aakash Chopra mentioned that Shubman Gill may not be retained as an opening batsman for the Border Gavaskar Trophy. He called Gautam Gambhir naming Abhimanyu Easwaran and KL Rahul as Backup openers during a press conference.
India will face Australia in a five-match test series starting on November 22 in Perth. It is uncertain whether skipper Rohit Sharma will play in the opening match. Head coach Gautam Gambhir mentioned that the final decision on his participation will be made closer to the final test, depending on his fitness and condition.
Aakash Chopra mentioned in a video on his YouTube channel that there is uncertainty about Rohit Sharma’s availability for the first match. He also confirmed that Jasprit Bumrah is set to captain the team, as he was previously named vice-captain. This suggests Bumrah may lead the side in case Rohit is unavailable.
Aakash Chopra noted that Gautam Gambhir had mentioned Abhimanyu Easwaran and KL Rahul as potential openers. He also stated that Gambhir believes Shubman Gill should continue in his current role and not be moved to the opening position. This suggests that the team is looking at other options for the opening spot.
KL Rahul has scored 2551 runs in 75 innings as an opener, including seven centuries and 12 half-centuries. In the second unofficial test against Australia A, he scored 4 and 10. Abhimanyu Easwaran has struggled, scoring 7,12,0 and 17 in two matches against Australia A. Shubman Gill has scored 874 runs in 29 innings as an opener, including two centuries and four half-centuries, but has recently batted at No.3.
