MCG to Host Historic Ashes Day-Night Test for 150th Anniversary of Men’s Test Cricket
Cricket Australia has announced a day-night Test between Australia and England at the MCG from March 11-15, 2027, celebrating 150 years of men's Test cricket. This will be the first-ever pink-ball men's Test at the MCG, following the women’s Ashes Test earlier this year. The match won’t be part of the WTC but is among 12 Tests scheduled for the season.
For the 150th anniversary of men’s Test cricket, Cricket Australia has announced a historic day-night Test match between Australia and England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) from March 11-15, 2027. This will be the first-ever pink-ball men’s Test at the MCG, following the women’s Ashes day-night Test held there earlier this year.
The 1877 inaugural Test and the 1977 Centenary Test at the MCG were both daytime red-ball matches, but this landmark fixture will be played under floodlights to allow greater audience engagement. Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg highlighted the significance of this event, calling it a tribute to both cricket’s rich history and its modern evolution.

The Test will not be a part of the World Test Championship (WTC) but is among 12 scheduled Tests in the season. Australia will also play three Tests in Sri Lanka, three at home against New Zealand, and five in India. Additionally, the team will travel to England for the Ashes and later compete in the ODI World Cup in South Africa.
With support from the Victorian Government and Melbourne Cricket Club, this milestone event promises to create new iconic moments, much like the Centenary Test in 1977, which featured David Hookes’ legendary five consecutive boundaries.
