KL Rahul Potential Return as Opener, A Tactical Boost for India in the Border Gavaskar Trophy

Experienced batter KL Rahul is being considered for an opening spot in India's first test match in the upcoming five games series against Australia. Led by captain Rohit Sharma, India is ready to face Australia in this final series of their current World Championship cycle.

Since Rohit Sharma may miss the first test in Perth, the Indian team management is thinking of moving KL Rahul up to the opening position. The experienced batter is also expected to open for India A in their upcoming unofficial test match against Australia A, giving him more practice in the role before the main series.

KL Rahul’s performance will be closely watched, as he competes with the in-form Abhimanyu Easwaran to join Yashasvi Jaiswal as an opener in Perth. Is promoting Rahul a smart strategy?

When KL Rahul debuted in tests in 2015, he started in the middle order, but India soon recognized his talent as a top-order player. By his second test, he was promoted to open with Murali Vijay. Out of his 91 test innings, Rahul has opened 75 times, making him well-suited to return to the top if needed.

Rahul has scored 2,551 runs including seven centuries, as an opener, but his average of just 34 doesn’t reflect his full potential. With more focus and improvement in his consistency, he could become India’s key opener in the Border Gavaskar Trophy, showcasing his true talent at the top of the order.
