India vs Australia: Jasprit Bumrah’s Captaincy Prospects Stall as Rohit Sharma Struggles in Australia

Jasprit Bumrah’s potential captaincy of India has been called into question amid Rohit Sharma's slump in Australia. While Bumrah has shown promise, including leading India to a 295-run victory in the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test in Perth, Kapil Dev believes it’s too early to judge his leadership based on limited experience. Bumrah has captained in just two Tests, with one win and one loss.

India vs Australia has always been a mega event with all the eyes on the battle between two cricketing giants. The recent Test series, however, has seen Rohit Sharma’s slump in form raise questions about his captaincy. Amid this, Kapil Dev addressed the issue of Rohit’s successor, with Jasprit Bumrah emerging as a potential candidate.

However, Kapil emphasized that it’s too early to judge Bumrah’s leadership abilities, as he has only captained India in two Tests. Bumrah led India to a 295-run victory over Australia in Perth, showcasing his potential. Still, Kapil Dev believes a larger sample of captaincy experience is necessary before any conclusions can be drawn. He said:

I think it’s too early to talk about that (Rohit Sharma’s successor). With one performance, you can’t say he’s one of the best, and with one bad performance, you can’t say he doesn’t deserve to be there. Let a player play a lot of cricket, take on a lot of captaincy, and go through ups and downs. Then you judge a person by how they reacted during the difficult times—not the good times. In good times, there’s no need for judgment.

While Virat Kohli’s recent struggles have also sparked discussions, Kapil remains confident that Kohli, one of India’s finest cricketers, will bounce back. This ongoing series between India and Australia continues to be pivotal for India’s leadership prospects.
