IND vs AUS: Rohit Sharma Reflects on Ravichandran Ashwin’s Retirement and Legacy

In the second Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, Ashwin played his final match for the national team, scoring 22 and 7 runs in his two innings. He also took Mitchell Marsh’s wicket, marking his last international scalp. After this match, he was replaced by Ravindra Jadeja for the third Test.

At the post-match press conference in Brisbane, Rohit Sharma and decisions like Ashwin’s retirement are personal. He highlighted Ashwin’s long-standing role in the team, noting that Ashwin was very certain about his decision. Rohit told reporters on Wednesday:

Some decisions are very personal and I don’t think too many questions should be asked or raised. If a player has (made) a choice, he has to be given that choice, and somebody like Ashwin who has been there for us for so many years is allowed to make those kinds of decisions on his own and we as team-mates have to respect it. He was very sure about what he wanted to do and the team has complete backing of his thought process.

Ravichandran Ashwin had a distinguished international career, playing in 287 matches across formats and taking 765 wickets. He played a key role in India’s victories in the 2011 ODI World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy, cementing his place among India’s greatest cricket players.
