IND vs AUS: Sunil Gavaskar Critisises Yashasvi Jaiswal’s Reckless Shot at The Gabba
Sunil Gavaskar criticized Yashasvi Jaiswal for his reckless shot after the young opener was dismissed early in the third Test against Australia at The Gabba, Brisbane. Jaiswal's dismissal was disappointing given the team's challenging target of 445 runs.
Mitchell Starc struck early on Day 3, dismissing Yashasvi Jaiswal on just the second ball he faced. Starc bowled a 139kph half-volley on middle and leg and Jaiswal attempted a flick but only managed to chip it straight to Mitchell Marsh at short mid-wicket in Brisbane.
Sunil Gavaskar criticized Jaiswal for being too aggressive too soon, emphasizing that the opening batter’s job was to handle the new ball carefully and not to take unnecessary risks. He said:
It’s not the best of shots. You’re facing 445 runs, and I think it’s important for you to get your eye in. It wasn’t even a half volley, and you tried to flick that ball away, and it’s a simple catch. Very good field placing, very good captaincy by Pat Cummins for sure, but that is not the best of shots that you expect from an opening bat, particularly when your opposition has got 445. Your job now for that one hour was to try and stay at the crease. Yashasvi Jaiswal, is very, very disappointing. He’s gone for just four.
Sunil Gavaskar expressed disappointment with Yashasvi Jaiswal’s attempt to flick a length ball that wasn’t a half-volley, leading to an easy catch for Mitchell Marsh at short mid-wicket on Day 3 of the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 in Brisbane. The shot was seen as reckless given the challenging situation.
Yashasvi’s early dismissal for just 4 runs was seen as a lack of maturity, with Michael Vaughan criticizing his approach for not trying to build an inning at such a critical moment in the Gabba Test.
