IND vs AUS: Aakash Chopra Gives His Views on Rohit Sharma’s Caution Over Mohammed Shami’s Return
Aakash Chopra believes fast bowler Mohammed Shami is not in India's plans for the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. He pointed to a statement from Rohit Sharma to explain how the team's strategy has shifted, indicating a change in focus for the upcoming series.
After the Adelaide Test against Australia, reporters asked Rohit if Mohammed Shami could still return to the ongoing Test series. Rohit acknowledged the possibility but stressed that the team wouldn’t take any risks by bringing him back too quickly, ensuring recovers before rejoining the squad.
In a video on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra discussed Rohit Sharma’s comments on Mohammed Shami’s potential return. While seen as positive, Chopra noted it could be a signal that Shami may not play the series due to concerns about rushing him back too soon. He said:
Mohammed Shami has played a lot of cricket. Of course, he started playing cricket after a year. So there was a lot of skepticism about whether he would be fit or not and that he shouldn’t get injured again. However, he has been playing thus far and he has looked quite okay.
Chopra explained that the Indian team management believes Mohammed Shami is not yet fit enough to return to the squad. This is the reason for his continued absence from the team, as they are cautious about bringing him back too soon.
There were reports that Mohammed Shami could join the squad for the last two Tests of the Border Gavaskar Trophy, but nothing has been confirmed. India’s bowling attack is inexperienced, relying on Bumrah and Siraj for pace.
