For 19-year-old Sam Konstas, this Christmas is unlike any before. A few years ago, he spent Christmas Eve playing backyard cricket with his brother, but now he’s preparing to face India’s star bowler Jasprit Bumrah in the Boxing Day Test at the MCG. With the Border-Gavaskar Trophy tied 1-1.

Konstas, poised to open the batting in his debut Test, spoke confidently about his preparations. He stated:

I do have a plan for Bumrah but I am not going to tell what it is. Trying to put pressure back on bowlers. All are very good bowlers… world-class, looking forward to experiencing that challenge and living that.

This isn’t his first time at the MCG. Playing for New South Wales, he once fell to Scott Boland on this very pitch. He added:

It is a different wicket from when I have played earlier. Bowler friendly but playing at the MCG on sell out Boxing Day is a dream come true.

A promising batter, Konstas has drawn comparisons to Shane Watson for his aggressive style of play. About these comments, Sam shared his humble views, and stated:

I don’t look too much on social media but would take that as a compliment. I have learnt a lot from Shane Watson and I like to take the game on and put pressure on the bowlers. He is a legend of the game, and hopefully, I can do that this week on my debut.

With his family in the stands, Konstas acknowledges the sacrifices they’ve made for his career and confirmed their availability in his debut international match. Now, all eyes are on the young opener as he looks to shine under the spotlight.
