Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25: Dinesh Karthik Highlights Shubman Gill’s Technical Struggles in Border-Gavaskar Trophy
Dinesh Karthik criticized Shubman Gill’s technical errors in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia, citing his tendency to play with hard hands, a flaw not suited to overseas conditions. With the series tied 1-1, Karthik stressed that Gill's lack of adjustment to foreign pitches has led to his struggles.
Former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has pointed out Shubman Gill’s technical flaws that have contributed to his disappointing performance in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. Gill has managed just 60 runs across three innings, struggling with his form as India looks to bounce back in the series, which is currently leveled at 1-1.
Karthik highlighted that Gill’s batting technique, honed largely through white-ball cricket, has led to him playing with “hard hands, particularly in Australia. He said:
I think Shubman Gill definitely got a slight technical error… When you play a lot of white ball cricket, you tend to do that. Even Travis Head does that but what he has found his method of doing that… Shubman Gill is playing like he would play in India, where he sees the release, and goes for the ball with hard hands.
Karthik further added on this:
Now in Australia, sometimes, in places like the Gabba, playing square of the wickets is much easier than in front… For a No.3 batsman who has been around for so long, Shubman Gill has played very ordinary shots, there are no mincing words there…
He criticized Gill for trying to drive the ball ambitiously, as seen in his dismissal at the Gabba, where he was caught playing an over-aggressive shot on the front foot.
With India’s top-order facing pressure, Karthik called for a more disciplined approach from Gill, urging him to focus on playing closer to the body and leaving the ball when necessary to succeed in challenging foreign conditions.
