With a match-winning knock in the 2nd Test against India, Travis Head has earned comparisons to the legendary Adam Gilchrist. Head scored an aggressive 140 runs off 141 balls in the first innings of the pink-ball Test in Adelaide, leading Australia to a commanding 157-run lead. His efforts contributed to Australia’s dominant 10-wicket victory.
Ricky Ponting, while praising Head’s attacking style, likened him to Gilchrist, noting their similar aggressive approach, though Head bats higher in the order at No. 5. Ponting also highlighted Head’s crucial performances in key moments, including in the World Cup and Ashes. He said:
The obvious one is Gilly. The way that Head plays is in a very similar way to the way that Gilchrist played, albeit a couple of positions higher in the batting order. Gilly was a six or seven, and Travis is doing his damage at No.5. I love sitting back and watching him play. It’s quite refreshing to watch guys play that way. It doesn’t matter what the situation is, Travis is going to come out and play the same way, and I love that.
Head’s consistency has earned him a rise to No. 5 in the ICC Men’s Test rankings. With a total of 1,052 runs against India across formats since 2023, Head continues to deliver in big matches, and he will next be seen in the 3rd Test in Brisbane starting December 14.
