India vs Australia: Rohit Sharma Responds with Humor to Pujara and Rahane’s Retirement Debate
Rohit Sharma humorously addressed the speculation around the retirements of Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane after the third Test against Australia in Brisbane. While acknowledging their absence, he clarified that neither player had officially retired, and the door remains open for their potential return to the Test team. Pujara and Rahane have seen a decline in form since India's 2021 historic win in Australia.
The Border-Gavaskar Trophy has been producing some of the best moments in cricket, and the third Test between India and Australia at the Gabba in Brisbane was no exception. The match ended in a draw after weather conditions prevented any further play on the final day.
India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, was asked about the absence of veterans like Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, and Ravichandran Ashwin, with the latter having recently retired. Rohit humorously remarked that Pujara and Rahane had not retired yet, suggesting they could still make a comeback. He said:
No, no, absolutely [I will miss them around]. Look, he has so much experience, he has won so many matches for India. So, if you want to look to your left or right and these guys are not there. By the way, Ajinkya Rahane hasn’t retired, aap mere ko maroge yar [you guys will get me in trouble]. I am saying as if all three have retired [chuckles]. Pujara too hasn’t announced his retirement. You took the names of all of them together, that’s why I was saying. They are not here right now. But I don’t know, they can still come back, the door is open for them.

He acknowledged their immense experience and contributions to Indian cricket. Pujara and Rahane, key players in India’s middle order for over a decade, have struggled in recent years. Pujara, who has scored 7,195 runs in 103 Tests, has faced a decline in form, while Rahane’s recent performances have been disappointing despite a strong IPL 2023. Both players still have opportunities for a potential return.
