India vs Australia: Labuschagne Fires Back at Warner with Gully Challenge
Marnus Labuschagne responded to David Warner’s comments about his form during the Adelaide Test. Warner doubted Labuschagne’s return to form after he was dismissed to the gully, but Labuschagne hit back, questioning how often he had been caught at gully. He also addressed critics of his approach, stating he prioritizes winning games for Australia over trying to please everyone.
Marnus Labuschagne and David Warner are now at the center of a verbal exchange, following Warner’s doubts about Labuschagne’s return to form during the Adelaide Test. Warner had criticized Labuschagne’s performance, questioning his ability to score big runs and pointing out that Labuschagne’s dismissals often come after reaching 50, particularly when he hits balls to gully.
Labuschagne, however, hit back, challenging Warner to check how often he has been dismissed in that manner, claiming only two such instances. Labuschagne also defended his aggressive approach with the bat, noting the contrasting criticism he received in the past week for either being too cautious or too attacking. He said:
I would like to see him check how many times I’ve been caught at gully because apparently, I get out there every week. I’ve looked back and I think I can only remember getting caught at Gully twice. So I might have to have a look at Bull’s (Warner’s) comment there. But like I said, everyone’s here to write newspapers, write articles. It’s a two-edged sword. A week before, I wasn’t playing enough shots, and then this week, people are unhappy because you’re playing too many shots. So the end of the day, I’m not here to please everyone. I’m here to win games for Australia.
Despite the remarks, Labuschagne emphasized his goal is to contribute to Australia’s victories rather than to meet external expectations. He also expressed disappointment at his early dismissal but remained optimistic about the team’s success.
