India vs Australia: Khawaja Supports McSweeney’s Steady Approach to Scoring Runs
Usman Khawaja dismissed the idea that Test openers need high strike rates, emphasizing patience and consistency over speed. Supporting Nathan McSweeney as Australia’s new opener, he praised McSweeney’s reliable approach, comparing it to David Warner's balanced aggression and resilience. Khawaja also highlighted his foundation’s mission to support youth through cricket, connecting it with the upcoming Gabba Test.
As the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy approaches, both India and Australia are set for a thrilling series. Australian Test opener Usman Khawaja has voiced strong support for newcomer Nathan McSweeney, praising his steady, measured approach at the crease. Khawaja believes McSweeney’s cautious, run-building style will be a valuable asset against India’s skilled bowling attack.
Nathan McSweeney, at 25, is set to make his Test debut for Australia, opening against India in Perth. Known for his steady game as South Australia’s captain, he usually bats at No. 3, making his new role as opener a fresh challenge. His methodical approach differs from David Warner’s aggressive pace, but Usman Khawaja has shown confidence in McSweeney’s ability to build a strong platform. He said:
I don’t know where this myth started that you need someone to score really fast to do well. You’ve got five days to do it…I don’t know why you need to score fast. Opening’s as much about scoring runs as it is about being able to absorb. Davey was special; he could score runs while absorbing but he didn’t do it [score fast] every time. He was consistent; out there and setting a platform, and Nathan does that very well.
The change also lets Steven Smith resume his usual position at No. 4, adding depth to the lineup. Khawaja noted that patience and consistency at the crease are equally valuable, highlighting McSweeney’s potential impact in a format that rewards resilience.
