India’s stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah hailed regular skipper Rohit Sharma as the team’s real leader following India’s emphatic 295-run victory over Australia in the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. With Rohit absent on paternity leave, Bumrah led the team admirably, but he humbly stated that he was merely filling in for the seasoned leader.

Bumrah, who claimed eight wickets in the match, continued to shine in the final innings, where Australia was bowled out for 238. The comprehensive win marked one of India’s most dominant performances in Australian conditions.

When asked about the leadership transition as Rohit Sharma prepares to return for the second Test, Bumrah said:

He is the captain of our side, he has done a phenomenal job. I was filling in for him, I had a discussion with him when he was in India, we kept discussing how we are shaping up. I am not going to tell him that I am going to lead, but yeah, I am going to help him in whatever capacity I can.

Also, he expressed his special thanks and gratitude for this special victory and expressed its importance, he further added:

My son is also here, I’ll share it with him. I’ll remember this for a while….This was my second game as the captain. We played well in the first innings of my debut game…..You will always take learnings from that, really happy with the way we came back in this match.

India leads the five-match series 1-0, with Rohit’s return expected to further bolster their campaign in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
