India vs Australia: Ashwin Sees Washington Sundar as the Future of India’s Spin Department

Ravichandran Ashwin, India's ace off-spinner, announced his retirement during the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. In a heartwarming gesture, Ashwin passed the baton to fellow Tamil Nadu cricketer Washington Sundar. Sundar, who has taken 24 wickets and scored 387 runs in seven Tests, is considered the closest like-for-like replacement for Ashwin due to his versatile skills as both a bowler and batsman.

After announcing his retirement from the Indian team, Ravichandran Ashwin has expressed his support for Washington Sundar as his natural successor. Sundar, an all-rounder from Tamil Nadu, is seen as the closest like-for-like replacement for Ashwin, offering both spin and batting depth. Ashwin, who made the announcement during the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, shared an emotional exchange with Sundar, with the latter posting a heartfelt tribute on social media, reflecting on their shared journey.

Sundar, who was chosen over Ashwin for the first Test in Perth, played a limited role with the ball but provided essential balance to the Indian team with his batting. So far, Sundar has taken 24 wickets and scored 387 runs in seven Tests. On Ashwin, Washington said:

You have been an inspiration. It’s been an honor to share the field and dressing room with you. Coming from the same state of Tamil Nadu, I have grown up watching you from the close corners of Chepauk to playing against and alongside you.

Ashwin, in return, acknowledged Sundar’s potential by referencing a Tamil film dialogue, symbolizing the passing of the baton. Sundar’s all-round capabilities and consistent performances make him a key figure in India’s cricketing future.
