IND vs AUS: Virat Kohli’s Brilliance and Mohammed Siraj’s Execution Lead to Steve Smith’s Dismissal

On Day 5 of the Gabba Test, Virat Kohli contributed significantly to dismissing Steve Smith by guiding Rohit Sharma and Mohammed Siraj in executing their plan effectively. His input was crucial in setting up the successful strategy.

In the first innings, Steve Smith returned to form with a brilliant century, helping Australia reach a total of 445 runs. India responded with 260 runs, managing to avoid the follow-on but conceding a lead of 185 runs to Australia.

Early in his innings, Smith appeared cautious but hit a boundary with a big shot off Siraj. On the very next ball, Siraj dismissed him with a delivery down the leg-side, which Smith edged to a diving Rishabh Pant behind the stumps.

The plan for the wicket was set by Kohli, who convinced Rohit to let Siraj bowl over the stumps despite initial doubts. Kohli advised setting the square leg deeper to support the inswing and allow Siraj to target the stumps. Australia declared at 89-7, setting India a target of 275 runs, with Siraj taking two wickets.

Australia started their second innings aggressively but lost wickets in quick succession. Mitchell Marsh was promoted up the order, shifting Steve Smith to No.6 instead of his regular No.4 spot. However, the plan didn’t work as Marsh was dismissed cheaply and Smith was needed at the crease earlier than expected. The batting order change couldn’t prevent Australia’s struggles to stabilise their innings in the face of India’s strong bowling attack.
