IND vs AUS: Jasprit Bumrah Discusses Leadership and Pace Bowlers Tactical Edge Ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Series
Jasprit Bumrah will captain India in the first Test of the upcoming five match series against Australia. He believes that pace bowlers should lead teams, as they offer tactical advantages to the leadership group, bringing a unique perspective to captaincy based on their experience on the field.
Rohit Sharma will not play in the first Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 at Optus Stadium in Perth on November 22. He is currently in India with his wife after the birth of their second child last week. Jasprit Bumrah will take over as interim captain for the first Test.
At a press conference, Jasprit Bumrah jokingly corrected a journalist who referred to him as a “medium pacer”, clarifying that he is a “fast bowler”. He also mentioned that fast bowlers make excellent captains because of their advantages and praised Pat Cummins for his leadership skills. Bumrah said:
I have always advocated for pacers being captains. They are tactically better. Pat has done a phenomenal job. There are a lot of models in the past as well. Kapil Dev and a lot of other captains in the past. Hopefully, a start of a new tradition.
Jasprit Bumrah has captained India in Test only once when Rohit Sharma was absent for the fifth Test against England in 2022. India lost the match by seven wickets, despite Bumrah’s strong bowling performance. The upcoming match at Optus Stadium will feature two pace bowlers leading their teams in Test cricket.
