IND vs AUS: Debate Over India’s Bowling Lineup for the Gabba Test

India will face Australia in the third Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 series at the Gabba in Brisbane, starting on Saturday, December 14. Following their recent loss in Adelaide, former cricketer Piyush Chawla has suggested a key change to the team's playing XI.

After India’s 295-run victory in the first Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy in Perth, the momentum changed swiftly when Australia bounced back with a 10-wicket win in Adelaide. The home team dominated the match, continuing their strong record in pink-ball games and outplaying the Rohit Sharma-led side.

Piyush Chawla has proposed that Akash Deep replace Harshit Rana in India’s playing XI for the third Test at The Gabba. The rest of the lineup remains unchanged as both teams aim to take the lead in the five-match series.

Rohit Sharma (c), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant (wk), Ravichandran Ashwin, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep.

Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has advised caution when selecting the playing XI, suggesting Akash Deep should only be included as the fourth seamer if the pitch is suited for pace. He said:

Not at the expense of Harshit Rana. But, I think that might happen. Just trying to read the team management’s mind, but if it’s an all-out pace pitch, he (Akash Deep) can be the fourth seamer…So India has to think about that carefully. This bowling lineup with Bumrah, Siraj, Harshit Rana, or Akash Deep is starting to look a little inadequate if the pitch is going to be as flat as it was in Adelaide in Brisbane. Otherwise, it should be enough.

The Indian pace trio of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Harshit Rana had a tough time in the pink-ball Test. While Bumrah and Siraj took four wickets each, Rana went wicketless and gave away runs at 5.40 per over, raising doubts about his spot in the team.
