Ian Smith and Sunil Gavaskar Back Will Young for Number Three Spot in New Zealand’s XI
As Kane Williamson is set to return from injury before New Zealand's tour of England, selectors will face a dilemma over the number three batting spot. Will Young, who got the chance to bat at number three in the recent test series in India, took full advantage of the opportunity.
Although Young didn’t score a century in his six matches, he played a key role in New Zealand’s 3-0 series win over India, scoring 244 runs at an average of 48.80. Commentator Ian Smith believes Young deserves more opportunities and should continue batting at number three, even after Kane Williamson returns.
Ian Smith stated that Will Young should have a spot in the top six, likely at number three. He praised Young for being one of the most organized New Zealand batters in tough conditions and argued that he shouldn’t be dropped. Young was named Player of the Series for his performance against India, with Smith confirming the TV commentary team unanimously chose him for the award.
Indian Cricketer, Sunil Gavaskar also commented on Young’s performance, saying:
To leave him out (of the XI against England) would be a testament to leaving out someone who’s just got 10 wickets in an innings. So, I’m not saying it won’t happen. But it shouldn’t. When India great Sunil Gavaskar says Young is his choice, that’s good enough for me. “That kid looks so organized. I think he’s a player for the future.” That’ll do me.
