In the first Test on Day 1 between England and New Zealand, Kane Williamson made a memorable return to the crease, anchoring the hosts to 319/8 at stumps with a remarkable 93. After missing the historic 3-0 series win in India due to injury, Williamson showcased his class and resilience at Hagley Oval, Christchurch. Facing a green pitch under challenging conditions, he started cautiously, contributing only seven runs to an opening partnership of 50 with Tom Latham (47). However, Williamson gradually found his rhythm, combining care with moments of controlled aggression, including two sublime boundaries to bring up New Zealand’s 100 in the 22nd over.

Williamson stitched crucial partnerships of 58 with Latham, 68 with Rachin Ravindra (34), and 69 with Daryl Mitchell (34), stabilizing the innings after Devon Conway fell early. His dismissal at 227/5, cutting a short ball from Gus Atkinson to backward point, marked the turning point as England fought back with late wickets.

Shoaib Bashir was England’s standout bowler, claiming 4/69 in 20 overs, while Glenn Phillips (41*) and Tim Southee (10) ensured New Zealand ended the day with a competitive total. Williamson’s knock, blending patience and flair, highlighted why he remains the backbone of New Zealand’s batting lineup.
