IPL 2025: Shreyas Iyer on the Verge of Making History as 1st Indian Cricketer to Achieve This Milestone

Shreyas Iyer has made history by becoming the first Indian cricketer to captain three IPL teams. After leading Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders, he has now been appointed as the captain of Punjab Kings for the 2025 season. Iyer, who previously led KKR to the IPL 2024 title, will begin his leadership role in the tournament, starting March 21, 2025.

After making an impact as the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals, Shreyas Iyer is set to make history by becoming the first Indian cricketer to captain three IPL teams. The 30-year-old has been appointed as the captain of Punjab Kings for the 2025 IPL season, which is set to begin on March 21. Iyer previously captained Delhi from 2018 to 2020, leading the team to an IPL final in 2020, and won the IPL title with KKR in 2024.

He was signed by Punjab Kings for a record Rs 26.75 crore at the IPL 2025 mega auction. With this move, he joins the exclusive club of players, including Mahela Jayawardene and Steve Smith, who have captained three different IPL franchises. Iyer will be the 17th player to captain Punjab Kings in the league’s history.

  • Shreyas Iyer – Delhi Capitals (2018-2020), Kolkata Knight Riders (2022, 2024), Punjab Kings (2025-).

As captain, he has won 38 out of 70 IPL matches, making him the sixth most successful captain in IPL history, after MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, and David Warner.

Under his leadership, Punjab Kings hopes to build on its success, with Iyer collaborating with Ricky Ponting, who was appointed head coach of the team.
