Indian Test Captaincy Decision Still Uncertain as Selectors Weigh Gill and Pant

Indian selectors remain divided between Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant for the Test captaincy after informal talks, according to Sky Sports. Rohit Sharma, 38, retired earlier in May, initially planning to retire mid-series in England. Jasprit Bumrah ruled himself out due to fitness concerns. The new captain will likely be announced before the England tour starting June 20.

In the wake of Rohit Sharma’s sudden retirement from Test cricket earlier this May, the Indian selection committee remains undecided about who will captain the Test team for the upcoming England tour starting June 20, 2025. Informal discussions have been held with the two main contenders, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant, but the selectors remain divided on both candidates.

At 25 years old, Gill is seen by some as not yet fully cemented in the Test squad, leading to suggestions that he would be better suited as vice-captain for now. Pant, on the other hand, is also a strong contender but has faced questions over consistency. Jasprit Bumrah, another potential candidate, has ruled himself out, citing his inability to commit to playing all five Tests in England.

Rohit, aged 38, had originally planned to retire mid-series during the England tour, emulating MS Dhoni’s phased retirement in 2014. However, selectors prioritized captaincy consistency and informed him he could be in the squad but not lead the team, prompting his immediate retirement from Tests.

In addition to Rohit, former captain Virat Kohli also retired from Test cricket ahead of the series. The selectors are expected to announce the new captain and squad soon, amid growing anticipation from fans and cricket experts alike.
