India vs Australia: Sunil Gavaskar Highlights Jasprit Bumrah’s Role in Leading India’s Bowling Charge for Gabba Test
Sunil Gavaskar emphasized that Jasprit Bumrah has been carrying India's bowling attack in the ongoing series against Australia, with 12 wickets in the first two Tests. While Harshit Rana showed promise in Perth, his performance dropped in Adelaide. Gavaskar stressed that Mohammed Siraj needs to be more consistent and start picking up five-wicket hauls to ease the pressure on Bumrah.
For the 3rd Test between India and Australia at Brisbane, Sunil Gavaskar analyzed India’s bowling unit, highlighting Jasprit Bumrah’s pivotal role. Bumrah has been the standout performer, taking 12 wickets across the first two Tests, leading the series’ wicket tally. However, Gavaskar pointed out that Bumrah has been carrying the bowling attack almost single-handedly.
While Mohammed Siraj showed promise, especially in Adelaide, Gavaskar emphasized the need for Siraj to become more consistent and secure five-wicket hauls. He also noted Harshit Rana’s impressive debut in Perth, though he struggled in the second Test. He said:
Yes, to a great extent. You’ve got to say that. Mohammed Siraj is a good foil, but he has to start getting five wickets in an innings. Otherwise, the load is being picked up mainly by Jasprit Bumrah. But if Siraj can pick up two, three wickets, keep on breaking partnerships, then he certainly helps Jasprit Bumrah. Harshit Rana, the newcomer, bowled impressively in Perth, wasn’t as impressive in the second game at Adelaide. Maybe he just couldn’t find his rhythm, therefore, was not bowling the length that he should have, or the line that he should have. But hopefully, he will have learned. And then that makes it easy. It takes the load off Bumrah. Bumrah can then come in, in short bursts of four or five overs, and be much more effective.
Gavaskar stressed that India needs more support for Bumrah to be more effective, with Siraj and Rana providing crucial breakthroughs to ease Bumrah’s workload. The series is tied 1-1, and the Gabba Test holds great significance for both teams, as the winner will gain an edge in the race for a spot in the World Test Championship final.
