Ravi Shastri offered straightforward advice to Gautam Gambhir, urging him to remain calm and avoid external distractions or knee-jerk reactions. As India's Test coach under pressure after recent defeats, Gambhir is encouraged to understand his players deeply, including their strengths and mindsets, to make informed decisions and foster confidence, especially as the Border-Gavaskar Trophy approaches.
With the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy underway, the Indian team is under pressure to deliver, especially after recent series losses to Sri Lanka and New Zealand. Gautam Gambhir, India’s head coach, faces scrutiny as the team battles on and off the field.
Ravi Shastri, who once guided India to historic success in Australia, has offered advice to Gambhir: stay calm, avoid outside distractions, and understand players deeply.
Shastri emphasised the importance of knowing the strengths and weaknesses of each team member, which he learned during his tenure as head coach. He suggested that Gambhir’s ability to connect with even introverted players could transform them into match-winners. In the statement, Shastri suggested:
I think would be the first thing would be to be calm, you know, don’t let outside elements, influence you in any way. Because of that, don’t get into a position where knee-jerk reactions happen. Get to understand your players. You will see them in bad situations, you’ll see them in India, you’ll see them in overseas, you know, you will, notice what it takes for a player to click. You will understand situations of a team where a certain player might be better than the other.
As the match progresses, Gambhir’s approach will be pivotal. With the BCCI potentially reconsidering leadership roles based on performance in this series, the stakes have never been higher for India’s Test team.
