With the retirement of R Ashwin after the Gabba Test, Nathan Lyon expressed his surprise and respect for the Indian spin legend. Lyon, known for his rivalry with Ashwin, praised Ashwin’s exceptional skill and experience, highlighting that Ashwin has 536 Test wickets to his name. Lyon questioned why Ashwin was left out of the playing XI despite his legendary status, mentioning that India’s squad is filled with quality players, including Ashwin and Jadeja.

Lyon speculated that Ashwin’s decision to retire could stem from not being in India’s future plans, particularly with the upcoming World Test Championship cycle. He said:

Nothing but respect. Just the way Ash has conducted himself on and off the field for a number of years now, and his skill set is incredible. We’ve got different opinions on different things; there’s no right or wrong. But to have those conversations with a bowler like Ashwin is amazing. From different variations to different tactics, understanding what he’s trying to do. We are both very different. So our conversation this morning was brilliant and I hope we have more through the series and in the future as well.

Ashwin’s knee troubles and inconsistent selection in foreign conditions further influenced his decision. Lyon, who shares a mutual respect with Ashwin, congratulated him on his remarkable career, acknowledging his influence on both Indian and world cricket. Ashwin’s retirement marks the end of an era for Indian spin bowling.
