Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25: Rohit Sharma’s Return Sparks Debate Over India’s Batting Order

As Rohit Sharma returns for the Adelaide Test after missing the first match against Australia, India faces a selection dilemma. Former Indian opener Cheteshwar Pujara proposes reshuffling the top order to accommodate KL Rahul and Shubman Gill, sparking debate on the ideal batting positions for stability and success in the crucial encounter.

Rohit Sharma is set to rejoin India’s XI for the second Test against Australia in Adelaide, following his absence during the Perth Test due to personal reasons. The Indian skipper, who welcomed his second child recently, was spotted in the dressing room during the first Test’s final days. However, his return has created a dilemma for the team regarding the batting order.

With Rohit reclaiming his spot at the top of the order, KL Rahul, who opened in his absence, might need to adapt to a new position. Cheteshwar Pujara, weighing in on the issue, suggested one of Rohit or Rahul could bat at No.3. Pujara also argued that Rahul shouldn’t bat lower than No.3, while proposing Shubman Gill, recovering from a thumb injury, for the No.5 slot. He remarked:

I think, for some reason, if we can carry on with the same batting order like KL and Yashasvi to open, Rohit could come in at three. If Rohit wants to open, KL should bat at No. 3. Nothing later than that. I think he has to bat top of the order because it suits his game really well. I hope we don’t tinker around with that.

This reshuffling could push Rahul down to No.6, potentially displacing Dhruv Jurel. Jurel impressed during the first Test but might lose his spot due to Rahul’s technical prowess against Australia’s pace attack.

While the idea of rearranging the order aims to balance experience and skill, it could risk the winning combination and unsettle the roles. India faces a challenging decision as they prepare to counter Australia’s heavy bowling attack in the second Test.
