BCCI Puts Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir on Notice Ahead of England Tour
Following India’s 3-1 Border-Gavaskar Trophy defeat to Australia, the BCCI has sacked assistant coach Abhishek Nayar and fielding coach T. Dilip. Rohit Sharma’s poor Test form and Gambhir’s leadership are under scrutiny. The upcoming England tour and new WTC cycle (2025–27) will likely determine their future roles.

In the aftermath of India’s 3-1 defeat to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2025, pressure is mounting on both captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Gautam Gambhir. The BCCI has already acted by sacking Assistant Coach Abhishek Nayar and Fielding Coach T. Dilip, signaling a no-tolerance stance toward recent failures. Rohit Sharma’s poor batting form, including a self-benching in the final Test at Sydney, has added to concerns about his future in red-ball cricket.
India’s tour of England later this year is now being seen as a make-or-break series for both Rohit and Gambhir. The board will be closely monitoring their performance as India begins a new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle from June 2025 to 2027. Rohit may still be effective in white-ball formats, but his Test credentials are under intense scrutiny.
Despite winning the Champions Trophy recently, the BCCI has reportedly issued a strict 10-point guideline, emphasizing domestic participation for international players and restricting family access. Gautam Gambhir remains in charge for now, but his position is far from secure. With major changes already underway, India’s performance in the England series could significantly reshape the leadership structure of the national Test team.
