David Warner Considers Reversing Retirement for Border-Gavaskar Trophy
David Warner hints at his return from retirement for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 if selected. He's willing to play the upcoming Sheffield Shield game if the team considers his place, as Australia has struggled to find an opener like him.
Recently, the former Australian opener David Warner has expressed his will to return to the Test format for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, which will be played in Australia. Just a few months ago, Warner announced his retirement from the Test format but he said that he’ll be willing to return for the BGT if he receives a call.
The Australian cricket team has struggled to find an opener to pair with Usman Khawaja when it comes to Test cricket. Steven Smith tried his level best to be an opener, but he failed, due to which the management dropped his batting position. Although Travis Head could be a great option, his aggressiveness as the opener of the team in the Test format is still questionable.
Marcus Harris and Sam Konstas have been among the top choices by the Australian cricket team to open with Usman Khawaja for the upcoming five match Test series against India. Cameron Bancroft might also be included in the squad for this role. Amidst this, David Warner has hinted at his return to the Test format. He announced that he’ll be playing the next county game for New South Wales to prove his spot in the Test team.
Warner on His Return to Test Format for BGT
The former opener David Warner says that his preparation levels have been at level with the current squad. For his return in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, he said,
I’m always available; I just got to pick up the phone. I’m always dead serious. Let’s be honest, the guys have played one red ball game (first round of the shield) since their last Test matches in February, so I’ve almost had the same preparation.
However, Warner also said that the coaches and the team are not ready to take him for the Test format, saying that,
I’ve cheekily messaged both. I’ve spoken to Torch (McDonald), and his answer back to me was, “You retired.” I don’t think he wants to give me the pleasure of him saying, “Can you come back?”
