Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25: Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill Focus on Extra Training to Regain Form Amid BGT Struggles
Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill, facing criticism for their poor performances in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, dedicated extra hours to practice at the Gabba on December 17. Kohli worked on his weakness against deliveries outside off-stump, while Gill sought to find his rhythm. Former players expressed hope that the additional sessions would help them regain form.
Former India captain Virat Kohli, battling inconsistency in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, took to the nets for an extended practice session ahead of Day 4 of the third Test at the Gabba, Brisbane. Kohli, alongside Shubman Gill, worked rigorously on December 17 to address technical flaws that have plagued their performances against Australia.
Kohli’s struggles against deliveries outside the off-stump have been evident, with all four of his dismissals in the series resulting from catches behind the stumps. In the first innings, he fell for just 3 runs after chasing a wide delivery from Josh Hazlewood. Similarly, Gill’s woes continued as he was dismissed for 1 run, edging Mitchell Starc early in his innings.
Former cricketers lauded the duo’s commitment to improve. Harbhajan Singh noted their determination, stated:
They have been hitting a lot of balls here. Why are they here? They haven’t been scoring a lot of runs in this series. India need Virat and Gill to fire… You can feel good by hitting a lot of balls. When you are not in form, you can feel better by hitting a lot of balls.
Australian great Allan Border analyzed Kohli’s dismissal, suggesting a dip in mental sharpness. He remarked:
Today’s dismissal, that’s normally a delivery he would have left alone if he was in his best possible form. I’m not sure what’s going on with Virat mentally (and) whether he’s just lost that edge.
As India trails in the Test, these practice sessions may prove pivotal in reigniting their batting prowess and strengthening the team’s fightback.
