BCCI Drops Saliva Ban, Introduces 2 New Balls in IPL 2025 – Major Rule Changes Unveiled!
In a major IPL 2025 update, BCCI lifted the saliva ban after Mohammed Shami’s complaint, allowing players to shine the ball. Additionally, two new balls will be used in the second innings from the 11th over to counter the dew factor. However, the Impact Player rule will remain unchanged this season.
For the upcoming IPL 2025 season, several major rule changes have been introduced following a captains’ meeting held on March 20 in Mumbai, ahead of the tournament opener between KKR and RCB on March 22. One of the key changes is the lifting of the saliva ban, which was imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Responding to complaints from players like Mohammed Shami, the BCCI has now allowed players to apply saliva on the ball to assist in reverse swing, restoring a traditional skillset to bowlers.
Another significant development is the introduction of two new balls during the second innings of matches. This rule aims to tackle the persistent dew factor, which has often given the chasing side an undue advantage. However, the new ball will only be available from the 11th over of the second innings, and the on-field umpires will decide its necessity based on dew conditions. Notably, this rule will not apply to afternoon matches.
While there were speculations about the removal of the Impact Player rule, the BCCI clarified that no such change will be made for IPL 2025. The captains’ meeting also included discussions on several other playing conditions, setting the stage for a balanced and competitive season ahead.
