Axar Patel Named Delhi Capitals Captain for IPL 2025
Delhi Capitals have appointed Axar Patel as their captain for IPL 2025. Axar, who has been with DC since 2019, was their top retention at INR 16.50 crore. He replaces Rishabh Pant and will lead a squad featuring KL Rahul, Faf du Plessis, and Mitchell Starc. DC, still chasing their first title, start their season on March 24 against LSG in Visakhapatnam.

For the 2025 IPL season, Delhi Capitals (DC) have appointed Axar Patel as their captain. Axar, who has been with DC since 2019, was the franchise’s top retention at INR 16.50 crore before the mega auction. Although his captaincy experience is limited, he has led Gujarat in 23 domestic matches and was India’s T20I vice-captain earlier this year. He also captained DC in one IPL match in 2024 when Rishabh Pant was suspended.
Last season, Axar played 14 matches, scoring 235 runs at an average of nearly 30 and taking 11 wickets at an economy of 7.65. DC chairman Kiran Kumar Grandhi highlighted Axar’s leadership growth, while co-owner Parth Jindal praised his all-round development, citing his key role in India’s Champions Trophy win, where he took five wickets at an economy of 4.35 and contributed with the bat.
DC, one of three original IPL teams yet to win a title, finished sixth in 2024. Axar will lead under a new coaching staff featuring Hemang Badani (head coach), Venugopal Rao (director of cricket), and Matthew Mott (assistant coach). DC start their campaign against LSG in Visakhapatnam on March 24. Other newly appointed IPL captains include Rajat Patidar (RCB), Ajinkya Rahane (KKR), Rishabh Pant (LSG), and Shreyas Iyer (PBKS).
