In the history of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, another remarkable chapter was added as Abhishek Sharma smashed a stunning 28-ball century for Punjab against Meghalaya. This feat ties him with Urvil Patel for the second-fastest T20 hundred.

Patel had achieved the milestone just a week prior, scoring 113, not out of 35 balls for Gujarat. The fastest T20 century remains with Sahil Chauhan, who reached the mark in 27 balls for Estonia earlier this year.

Abhishek’s blistering knock of 106 not out off just 29 balls helped Punjab chase Meghalaya’s target of 142 in a mere 9.3 overs. This victory marked Punjab’s fifth win in seven Group-A matches, significantly boosting their net run rate and enhancing their chances of progressing to the tournament’s knockout stage.

With this innings, Abhishek also became the leading centurion in the tournament’s history, with four centuries, surpassing players like Ishan Kishan and Ruturaj Gaikwad, who each have three.

Abhishek, a pivotal player for Sunrisers Hyderabad, was retained for INR 14 crore ($1.67 million) for IPL 2024. On the same day, Baroda shattered the record for the highest team total in men’s T20 cricket, amassing 349 for 5 against Sikkim. This day etched itself into T20 cricket’s history books.
