IPL 2025: Ricky Ponting Reacts to Shardul Thakur and Prithvi Shaw Going Unsold in IPL 2025 Auction

Ricky Ponting, a legendary Australian cricketer, previously worked as the head coach of Delhi Capitals until the 2024 IPL season. During that time, he coached both Prithvi Shaw and Shardul Thakur. Currently, he is the head coach of Punjab Kings in the IPL.

Some surprising players, including Shardul Thakur and Prithvi Shaw, went unsold at the auction, leading to widespread discussions and confusion. However, Ricky Ponting believes they lack the kind of spark needed in the fast-evolving format of the IPL, which may have contributed to their failure to attract bids.

Shardul Thakur was highly valued just two years ago, but he failed to attract any interest in the IPL 2025 auction, despite being a skilled all-rounder with a strong track record. In the 2022 auction, he was bought for INR 10.75 crore, but his base price of INR 2 crore went unnoticed this time.

Some believe Shardul Thakur’s high base price of INR 2 crore scared off franchises, while others point to the timing of his bid as a factor in him going unsold. According to a franchise insider, the Impact Player rule, which has changed team strategies, may have reduced the demand for all-rounders like Thakur.
