Gautam Gambhir Points Fingers at IPL for Team India Struggles in BCCI Showdown
Gautam Gambhir's coaching staff has reportedly blamed the IPL for Team India's recent struggles during a BCCI review meeting. They argued that big IPL contracts lead to players not giving their best for the national team, particularly in Tests. India has been underperforming, with poor batting displays, resulting in losses against Sri Lanka, New Zealand, and Australia. Gambhir's future as head coach may depend on India's performance in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
The BCCI review meeting, held after India’s recent string of poor performances, saw Gautam Gambhir and his coaching staff come under scrutiny. The Indian team had a disappointing post-T20 World Cup 2024 campaign, suffering a historic ODI series loss to Sri Lanka after 27 years, a 3-0 whitewash against New Zealand, and a 3-1 defeat to Australia, which also cost them a spot in the ICC World Test Championship final.
During the review, Gambhir’s team management blamed the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the team’s struggles, attributing the poor performances to players being distracted by their lucrative IPL contracts. A member of the staff pointed out that several players lacked intensity and commitment during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, further exacerbating India’s issues in ODIs and Tests.
The team’s batting has been a significant weakness in the recent Test series, with failures both at home and in Australia. While the bowling has been solid, the lack of support from the batters led to India’s downfall. The future of Gambhir as head coach and Rohit Sharma as captain will be decided after the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, with their performances in the tournament expected to determine their continued roles.
