Ben Sears Ruled Out as Jacob Duffy Joins New Zealand Squad for ICC Champions Trophy
New Zealand fast bowler Ben Sears has been ruled out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 due to a hamstring injury sustained during training in Karachi. A scan revealed a minor tear requiring at least two weeks of rehabilitation, making him unavailable for most of the tournament. He is replaced by Jacob Duffy, who has taken 18 wickets in 10 ODIs at an average of 25.94. New Zealand, led by Mitchell Santner, will face Pakistan on February 19, Bangladesh on February 24, and India on March 2.

Ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, New Zealand has made a last-minute squad change after fast bowler Ben Sears was ruled out due to a hamstring injury. Sears experienced discomfort in his left hamstring during a training session in Karachi, and scans revealed a minor tear requiring at least two weeks of rehabilitation. Given the short duration of the tournament, Sears would have only been available for New Zealand’s final group match against India on March 2 in Dubai.
To replace him, the Black Caps have brought in 30-year-old Otago pacer Jacob Duffy, who was already traveling with the squad for the tri-series against Pakistan and South Africa. Duffy has played 10 ODIs since his debut in July 2022, taking 18 wickets at an average of 25.94 and an economy rate of 6.25. His most recent appearance for New Zealand came in January 2025, where he picked up two wickets for 30 runs against Sri Lanka in Hamilton.
New Zealand coach Gary Stead expressed disappointment for Sears, calling it unfortunate that he had to miss his first major ICC tournament. However, Stead praised Duffy as a strong replacement, highlighting his experience in similar conditions and readiness to contribute. New Zealand will open their Champions Trophy campaign against Pakistan on February 19 in Karachi.
