Social Media Reacts as Rohit Sharma Silences Retirement Rumours
Social media erupted after Rohit Sharma firmly dismissed retirement rumours following India's 2-1 ODI series loss to England. The veteran opener answered critics with a brilliant 138 off 110 balls at Lord's, smashing 17 fours and 5 sixes, despite India's 27-run defeat. Rohit said his focus remains on representing India, while captain Shubman Gill confirmed the team has had no discussions about his retirement.
In the third and final ODI of the England series, Rohit Sharma put an end to the retirement rumours that had been circulating after India’s 2-1 series defeat. The veteran opener made his intentions clear in an interview with the BCCI, stating that his only focus is to represent India and contribute to the team’s success. Rohit said outside speculation has followed him since his international debut and insisted it does not affect his mindset. He even remarked that the “noise” around him adds to the excitement rather than distracting him.
The 39-year-old answered his critics with a brilliant 138 off just 110 balls at Lord’s, smashing 17 fours and five sixes. Despite his outstanding knock, India fell short of England’s imposing 387/3, finishing on 360/7 to lose by 27 runs. Rohit had managed only 11 and 26 in the first two ODIs before bouncing back with a century.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia had earlier dismissed reports suggesting Rohit would retire after the England series, while captain Shubman Gill also confirmed there had been no discussion about retirement within the Indian dressing room. Having already retired from T20Is and Tests, Rohit remains committed to ODI cricket. Earlier this year, he also reaffirmed his dream of leading India to victory at the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
