Shane Bond Warns Jasprit Bumrah of Career-Threatening Injury
Former New Zealand pacer Shane Bond has cautioned Jasprit Bumrah about his recurring back injury, warning that another setback could be career-ending. Bumrah, sidelined since January 2025, is recovering at the NCA. Bond highlighted his heavy workload, including 151.2 overs in Australia, and advised careful workload management ahead of IPL 2025 and India's England Test series.

With the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 concluded, concerns over Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness have resurfaced, with former New Zealand pacer Shane Bond warning that another back injury could be career-ending. Bumrah has been out since January 2025 after suffering a stress-related injury in the same area where he had surgery in March 2023. Currently undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, his availability for IPL 2025 remains uncertain, and reports suggest he could miss the first two weeks.
Bond, who struggled with chronic back issues and retired early, emphasised the risks of transitioning from T20 cricket to Test matches, especially with India’s five-Test series in England starting June 28 — just a month after the IPL ends. He noted Bumrah’s heavy workload during India’s 2024-25 Australia tour, where he bowled 151.2 overs across five Tests, including 52 overs in the Boxing Day Test.
Given the demands of the upcoming schedule, Bond advised that Bumrah should not play more than two consecutive Tests in England. He also warned that returning to action too soon could lead to another injury in the same area, potentially ending Bumrah’s career. As Mumbai Indians prepare for their IPL opener on March 23, Bumrah’s participation remains uncertain.
