ICC Champions Trophy 2025: BCCI Supports Government’s Decision and Considers Hybrid Model for ICC Tournament

Rajeev Shukla, vice president of the BCCI, expressed his support for the Indian government's decision not to send Team India to Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Bilateral cricket ties between India and Pakistan are currently suspended, so the BCCI requires government approval to send the Indian team to Pakistan. India last toured to Pakistan in 2008, but all relations were cut off after the Mumbai terrorist attacks, leading to a long pause in cricketing exchanges between the two nations.

Rajeev Shukla defended the BCCI amid criticism, stating that player safety would be the top priority. His comments came just before the ICC board meeting to finalise the schedule for the Champions Trophy. Shukla also mentioned that a hybrid model for the tournament could be considered as an option. He said:

Our discussions are going on. A decision will be taken after looking at the situation. Our top priority is the safety of the players. Hybrid mode is also an option; discussions are going on.

On Friday, the ICC board will decide on the schedule and venue for the Champions Trophy. Reports suggest that several options are being considered, including holding the entire tournament in Pakistan without India participating.

It’s unlikely that India’s absence would lead to a major financial loss to the ICC. Another option is a hybrid model, where Pakistan hosts most games, but India plays at a neutral venue. A third option is holding the entire tournament outside Pakistan, with the PCB keeping hosting rights.
