ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Shoaib Akhtar Discuss India-Pakistan Scheduling Deadlock and Potential Sponsorship Loss
After consulting with the Indian government, the BCCI decided not to send Team India to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy. In response, Pakistan rejected the hybrid model, where India would play their matches outside of Pakistan. The PCB has formally written to the ICC regarding the BCCI’s decision.
Shoaib Akhtar stated in a local interview that the resolution of the issue depends on the Indian government, not the BCCI. He mentioned that there would be back channel talks and advised Pakistan not to lose hope. Akhtar also highlighted that India contributes the majority of sponsorship for the ICC, making their involvement crucial in resolving the matter and ensuring a positive outcome for both countries.
He said:
If Pakistan fails to convince India to come to Pakistan, then two things will happen: Pakistan will lose about 100 million dollars of the sponsorship that will go to ICC and the host country will earn. Second, it would be better if India come and play in Pakistan. But it’s really, really up to the government. It has nothing to do with BCCI.
Shoaib Akhtar warned Pakistan could lose up to $100 million in sponsorship if India doesn’t tour for the 2025 Champions Trophy. He also mentioned that Virat Kohli is excited to play in Pakistan for the first time and the whole country is eager to see him play there.
