South Africa has selected a formidable squad for their upcoming three-match ODI series against Pakistan, ensuring they make the most of their final opportunity to play together before next year’s Champions Trophy. The squad includes several notable returns, such as Kagiso Rabada, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Keshav Maharaj, and Tabraiz Shamsi, who have been away from the format for almost a year.

With a tri-series in Pakistan scheduled for February, close to the conclusion of the SA20, South Africa’s first-choice squad will not be available, making this series particularly important. The young fast bowler Kwena Maphaka, impressed at the Under-19 World Cup and the T20I series against Pakistan. Coach Rob Walter remarked:

The bowling line-up features one of the fastest in the game in KG, and this series offers another great opportunity for a young talent like Kwena to come in and learn first-hand from the best. In the batting department, we are thrilled to welcome back David and Heinrich, two of the most destructive players in the game. Overall, we are very pleased with this squad.

Captain Temba Bavuma will lead the side, with Ryan Rickelton likely to open alongside him. The batting lineup boasts significant experience, including Aiden Markram, Rassie van der Dussen, and the returning Miller and Klaasen. The squad also features seam-bowling allrounders Andile Phehlukwayo and Marco Jansen, with Maharaj and Shamsi added to strengthen the spin department.

This series represents a crucial chance for South Africa to fine-tune their preparations for the upcoming international tournaments while keeping their focus on the World Test Championship qualification.
