ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Deep Dasgupta Advises Rest for Jasprit Bumrah Ahead of Champions Trophy After Injury Concern

Former Indian wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta recently advised the selectors and team management to avoid overworking star pacer Jasprit Bumrah by including him in the white-ball series against England. He suggested resting until the upcoming Champions Trophy, a more important event, to ensure he is fully fit.

Despite India losing the 2024-25 Border Gavaskar Trophy 3-1, Jasprit Bumrah stood out with his exceptional performance. He gave his best throughout the series, finishing as the leading wicket-taker with an impressive 32 wickets, showcasing his brilliance even though many other team members underperformed.

Deep Dasgupta’s comments followed after Jasprit Bumrah was diagnosed with a back spasm. Bumrah had complained of back pain after India’s second innings in the Sydney Test. He was quickly taken to a hospital for assessment and missed bowling in the final innings of the five-match series. He said:

Let him rest. Don’t even think about it till the Champions Trophy. Maybe, the last ODI if he is ready for it. Obviously, we are not sure about the extent of that back spasm, as we were told. So, we need to figure that out.

Deep Dasgupta suggested that the same approach should be applied to Mohammed Siraj, who bowled a total of 157.1 overs in the entire series. He emphasized the importance of managing the workload of key bowlers like Siraj to prevent exhaustion and injuries, ensuring they are fully fit for upcoming important events like the Champions Trophy.
