Champions Trophy 2025: BCCI Rejects Hybrid Model as Dispute Over ICC Event Hosting Escalates
Discussions between the International Cricket Council, Pakistan Cricket Board, and Board of Control for Cricket in India regarding the ICC Champions Trophy issue appear to be making little progress. The deadlock continues and there seems to be no immediate solution in sight for the ongoing disagreement between the parties.
Hope emerged when the PCB reportedly agreed to be a hybrid model, which would see India’s matches played in Dubai, with certain conditions. However, the BCCI is said to have rejected Pakistan’s conditions, where the PCB requested that ICC events held in India also follow the same hybrid model.
The BCCI decided not to send its team to Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy, citing ‘security concerns’. They also rejected the PCB’s request to adopt a hybrid model for ICC events in India, stating there’s no ‘security threat’ in India. Reports stated that this decision was made after careful consideration. According to the report:
Sources told The Telegraph on Tuesday that the BCCI has sent a clear message to the ICC brass in this regard leading to a fresh impasse. The BCCI’s contention is simple – there is no security threat in India and hence no question of accepting such an arrangement. It is understood that all relevant parties are working towards finding an amicable solution to end the crisis and the ICC board will reconvene in the next few days.
In the next decade, India will host several ICC events, including the Women’s ODI World Cup in 2025 and the T20 World Cup in 2026 with Sri Lanka. The 2029 Champions Trophy and the 2031 ODI World Cup are also planned.
