Vaughan Critisises IPL Auction Timing as Warner and Ponting Eye Key Players

The IPL 2025 mega auction, scheduled for November 23-24 in Riyadh, overlaps with the first Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy, starting on November 22. Former England cricketer Michael Vaughan criticised the BCCI’s timing, suggesting the high profile auction might overshadow the Test match’s significance.

Daniel Vettori, Australia’s bowling coach and head coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad, chose to attend the IPL auction in Riyadh before rejoining the Australian team. Former players like Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer are also expected in the auction, highlighting its importance in the cricketing calendar.

Cricket Australia has supported Vettori’s Choice, saying:

We are very supportive of Dan’s role as head coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad. Dan will complete final preparation for the first Test before attending the IPL auction. He will then be with the team for the remainder of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

A total of 137 Australian players, including Mitchell Starc, young opener Jake Fraser-McGurk and former Australian opener David Warner, will be part of the IPL auction. These players are expected to attract attention during the auction, with Warner’s inclusion adding to the excitement surrounding the event.

David Warner thinks that Punjab Kings head coach Ricky Ponting might target Jake Fraser-McGurk in the IPL auction. He pointed out that Punjab has the biggest budget and can focus on the players they want. Warner also mentioned that Fraser-McGurk shares a good relationship with Rishabh Pant, which could influence the decision.
