IPL 2025: Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Bold Gamble on Ishan Kishan Sparks Mixed Reactions, Natarajan’s Exit Raising Question Marks
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) made headlines at the IPL 2025 mega auction by securing Ishan Kishan for ₹11.25 crore, despite the wicketkeeper-batter being out of India's central contracts and national team for a year. While head coach Daniel Vettori expressed excitement about Kishan’s addition, former Australian cricketer Tom Moody questioned the move, citing potential role conflicts in the team.
Sunrisers Hyderabad’s acquisition of Ishan Kishan at ₹11.25 crore during the IPL 2025 mega auction has drawn a mix of praise and skepticism. Known for his explosive batting at the top of the order, Kishan will face competition from Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, SRH’s well-established opening pair.
Former Australian cricketer Tom Moody expressed concerns over the logic of this high-stakes purchase. He remarked:
Yes, well it’s flawed mate. I didn’t see that coming, did not see that coming. We tried to get him four years ago and failed. I think we pushed Mumbai Indians back then…..But look again, a dynamic player, Sunrisers again are going to be playing a few shots at the top of the order, aren’t they.
On the other hand, SRH head coach Daniel Vettori was thrilled with Kishan’s inclusion. He showed heavy confidence upon the decision to buy the star keeper-batter.
Despite Kishan’s return to domestic cricket with the Ranji Trophy, questions remain about his recent form and ability to justify the hefty price tag. Meanwhile, SRH strengthened their pace attack with marquee buys Mohammed Shami (₹10 crore) and Harshal Patel (₹8 crore).
However, Vettori admitted the team felt the pinch of losing left-arm pacer T Natarajan to Delhi Capitals. He stated:
Nothing sets off Nattu’s loss (smiles). Every team goes through it, whether you try and find the players early and…pounce on opportunities or you try and wait for the back end.
SRH’s bold auction choices signal an aggressive approach for IPL 2025, but only time will tell if Kishan’s addition proves to be the winning formula.
