IPL 2025: RCB Captaincy Decision on Kohli’s Return and Missed Opportunities in IPL Auction
Royal Challengers Bengaluru plans to have Virat Kohli back as captain for IPL 2025, which is why they didn't focus on finding a new captain in the recent mega auction. While they bid for KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant, they weren't aggressive in pursuing them.
There were rumours that RCB might target local player KL Rahul as a potential captaincy option for IPL 2025. However, they stepped back from pursuing him once the bidding crossed Rs 10 crore during the mega auction held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. This decision showed they were not willing to spend heavily on Rahul.
At the auction, RCB showed interest in Rishabh Pant but stopped bidding once the price crossed Rs 10 crore. KL Rahul was eventually bought by Delhi Capitals for Rs 14 crore, while Lucknow Super Giants made IPL history by signing Pant for an incredible Rs 27 crore, making him the league’s most expensive player ever.
According to reports, RCB has decided on their captain for IPL 2025, with Kohli set to take up the role again. Before the mega auction, Kohli had discussions with the team management and expressed his desire to return as captain, making it clear that he wanted to lead the franchise once more.
From 2013 to 2021, Kohli captained RCB for nine IPL seasons but couldn’t secure the team’s first first title. Under his leadership, RCB reached the playoffs only four times and came closest to winning in 2016, losing to Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final. As captain, Kohli achieved 66 wins but also faced 70 losses in the tournament.
