Afghanistan Cricket has been on a high-performance trajectory since Jonathan Trott’s appointment as head coach in July 2022. The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has extended Trott’s contract until 2025, ensuring his guidance for the team’s maiden Champions Trophy appearance next year. Trott, a 43-year-old former England batter, has played a pivotal role in Afghanistan’s cricketing success, including reaching their first-ever T20 World Cup semi-final in 2024 with wins over Australia and New Zealand.

Afghanistan’s ODI World Cup campaign in India last year was equally impressive, with victories against top teams like England, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, securing a top-eight finish to qualify for the Champions Trophy. Under Trott’s leadership, Afghanistan has played 34 ODIs, winning 14, and 44 T20Is, winning 20. Additionally, the team achieved bilateral series wins over South Africa and Bangladesh by 2-1 margins in Sharjah.

Currently touring Zimbabwe for an all-format series, Afghanistan will play three T20Is, three ODIs, and two Tests. Trott will coach only the ODIs due to personal commitments, with Hamid Hassan stepping in as head coach for other formats and Nawroz Mangal as assistant coach. The ACB continues to back Trott’s efforts to elevate Afghanistan cricket on the global stage.
